the hashihime lore.
FOR THE LOYALISTS
Hashihime, named as "Hashihime the Bridge Princess," was also a homophone for “Hashihime the Pretty Princess”. Over time, people began to give new meaning to the name. One of the most popular legends is about a woman whose husband went off to war and never returned; she wept by the riverbank in sorrow until she was transformed into the Hashihime. Another version of the mask tells the tale of a noblewoman who, by conflicting accounts, either had a husband who cheated on her or took a second wife and paid more attention to her. The woman prayed for revenge and went through a ritual that would turn her into an oni-monster in Japanese.
The mask still looks human, but with details that slowly transforms them into a demon. Eyes that gradually turn red with golden yellow irises, maddening lips and teeth. Her neatly tied hair began to fall out in anger. The overall face becomes distorted with many deep wrinkles. All of these details tell a story about her abandoned life.
